A quick but thorough history lesson straight from the horses' mouths. Rightfully placing ghetto-house in America's storied tradition of urban music rather than in a more nebulous international dance music context.
This documentary makes a strong argument for discussing Chicago, Detroit, and Baltimore music alongside crunk and hyphy rather than disco or deep house.
Then again, I did find this link on resident advisor so perhaps the battle's been lost.
Nevertheless, the music covered here follows son raw's golden rule of beats: it was made by young urban kids who didn't give a fuck about mainstream appeal and who were determined to push their own sound forward, which almost always guarantees good stuff.
